iPhone Regrets
For the past six months I have been skeptical about the iPhone and what it could do. However based on the amazing reaction the iPhone received on opening day; I was convinced that I had to at least check out the device for myself.
With that in mind I headed down to the Apple Store that weekend and I was faced with a crowd of people trying out the device. I have to say that by eyes alone it is one of the most beautiful designs that I have seen to date. Then I had a chance to finally try out one of the most over hyped gadgets ever and I have to say that I was extremely impressed.
Everything worked exactly as advertised. Especially with the on-screen keyboard which was the one feature I criticized the most. Within five minutes I was typing away with two thumbs faster than I do on my AT&T 8525. The next day I went ahead and purchased the iPhone with eager anticipation to race on home and get it activated.
After trying it out for a couple of days I was so amazed at how fun it was to use. Making phone calls was an absolute breeze and surfing the internet was an amazing experience. I had more fun surfing the internet on my iPhone than I normally do on my laptop or desktop computer.
However, the iPhone does have some drawbacks and I found myself missing some features that I gave up from my 8525. Lack of 3G service, a simple file browser, and a simple word processor are just a small sample of what this device is lacking. Granted I new full well both the positives and the negatives before I purchased the device, however I wanted to see whether or not the user experience and the other features it offered was worth the investment.
Needless to say that based on some personal issues I had to return the iPhone back to the Apple Store. It has been one week since the return and I have been using my 8525 ever since. With that said I have to say that I wish I didn’t return the device. Granted the 8525 can do a lot more than the iPhone however the user experience is absolutely awful and I’ve been pondering how I can get that gem of a device that Apple made back into my hot little hands.
In the end it was a great experience and I have to say that as a web developer I learned a lot about design and what a great user experience truly means. Once I have enough money saved up I will be more than happy to toss my 8525 in the trash, say goodbye to Windows Mobile, and get the iPhone again. Hopefully by the time I can purchase it Apple will have released a firmware update to fix some of the minor flaws that exist in the device.
